“Living space” is where we live for our daily life. Nowadays most of us live in awell-equipped modern community. However, some people are still homeless even in such a fast-developing society. Because the soaring house price is turning the accommodation for residential purpose into an asset to earn profit. Some people can’t even afford to rent an accommodation let alone buying one while many commercial houses in top cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are empty.

I took my photos in places of Guangdong Pearl River Delta, where relatively rich people live, but even in those area, some people still have to live in shacks in the suburb. Those “temporary living space builder” are mainly migrant workers, low-income workers and vagrants. I didn’t choose the word “bottom people” which was commonly used by mainstream media as I hold the idea that “Everyone is equal”. Unfortunately, it is not always true especially when the society is increasing divided by the rich and poor. I don't show their portraits because they don’t want to be exposed by media and another reason is that it’s illegal to build accommodations without the official permission and they would lose their home once being discovered.

I found a lot of these temporary shacks during my field investigation and teaching work. But the owner had already moved to other places when I wanted to visit them several months later. This phenomenon is caused by a series of complex factors. I feel sad as what I could do is little. That’ s why I chose "temporary living space" as the topic of my photos - hoping to catch the attention from social security agencies, low-income housing shelters, community volunteers and other related institutions and groups.

The “temporary living space builders” don’t even know how to apply for social security because of their limited knowledge.
