< >
she drawed my hands,
leading me through the bamboo forest.
two little muddy "monkeys"——
her younger brothers
(one was four and the other was six)——stumbled casually
were ahead of us.
we ran toward the brook shaded by the trees.
at the noon of the summer day,
under the variegated sunshine,
the brook water sparkled
and flowed without hesitation.
all of a sudden,
she dragged me down on the mound
and the small cotton skir
stained with sparse tiny flowers spreaded,
what I caught at the first glimpse
were her protruding delicate knee,
her slim legs and glassy ankles,
on which a beam of sunshine was sheded,
and on the instep there was still some mud sticking,
I was totally stunned by the beauty
which was so clear and neat, so simple and brittle.
she showed a wide little purple flower up to my face,
behind the hazy petal was her eyes as innocent
as the brook water.
in a flash, an intensive desire woke up
which made me feel so shamed in the happy cheers
of the two boys not far away.
at that time she was ten and I seventeen,
all she knew about me was the very very distant city
where I was from.
I just finished the university entrance examination
and came for a holiday in the countryside,
like a soldier retired from the army
after a long-lasting war,
there was an endless wide prospect
in my mind.

< >
here the freeway comes to an end,
piles of sand and stones infront of the shelter,
there was no one in sight.
casual tweet down to ear from the thick forest
on the top of the mountain,
the heat at noon makes the valley even quiter.

< >I ascend the stairs, sweat down from hair
to eye edges. the memory fifteen years ago
was blurred now. if it's not by the way,
i won't visit this village twice.

< >
some brick cement houses
stand on the one side of the road
which passes by the village head
a shelter was built infront of the grocery,
a group of old people swing their rush fans,
some children bareback stare at me——a stranger
with puzzled eyes.

< >I'm embarrassed to walk close to the wood house in memory,
the door was left wide open, several hens peck food on the earth.
my widower uncle has been bent with age, "there is no one at home,
your two younger brothers works in other provinces,
earning a life. "

< >
finally I ask about her, uncle makes a sigh for quite a while:
"this disappointing wretch, fooling around with a bad guy for two years
will never go back home any more.
I've heard she is in QUAN ZHOU, running a hair-cut room now."

< >after supper I amble around the brook,
in the twilight the sweet fresh air of the grove
makes me almost drunk,
the black ground is covered by a layer of soft decayed leaves,
when I squat myself down
JESUS, all are the little purple wild flowers
in the damp and dark.
