> 他的肚子胀起来了 坐在门槛上，手在身上摸索 塞进嘴里。头颅很小，眼睛沦陷 他二十岁结婚，五年后 妻子死于肺结核，留给他两个儿子 小时候他是孩子王 带领我们在春天里偷蚕豆 拆下打谷机的轴承造滑轮车 在学校里不准我们喊他的外号 和邻村的同学干仗，冲锋陷阵，头破血流 成年后我们发现他很矮小 却能在贡江里下潜二十米打捞抽水机 有几年他去城里打工，捞些散票 至今还住在逼仄的瓦房里 他酗酒，焚烧过的身子骨披在石磨上 如腐朽的蓑衣。他驯服不了儿子， 常被摁在地上不能动弹。他过早地被击败了 四十岁，玩伴中很多人都胀起了肚子 而他却是那么的难看，让我们 不知如何跟他微笑，他也懒得搭理 似乎过去并不存在。村里人说起他 只一句：时间不多了 轻飘的语气中，让人觉出 那只从不现身的老虎

> his belly blew up he sat on the threshold with hands wandering on the skin and finally he put them into his mouth. his head was very small, his eyes sank in. he got married when he was 20 years old, five years later, his wife died of pulmonary tuberculosis, leaving him two sons. when we were all kids, he was the king of us, leading us to steal the broad bean in spring, dismantling the thresher of the shaft bearing and making it into skatemobile. in school he never let us call his nickname. he fought with the schoolmates from the neighboring village, breaking through enemy lines, badly beaten. when we grew up, we found he was short, but could dive 20 meters to salvage the water pump in the GongJiang river. he did some odd jobs in the city for several years, to earn a little money. now he was still living in narrow tile-roofed house. he drank too much, the body burned by alcohol, lying on the stone mill like decayed straw raincoat. his sons were too wild to tame, he was often pressed onto the ground by them, without a stir. he was defeated too young, only 40 years old. many playmates among us now all had a belly blowing up. he was so ugly that made us not know how to smile with him, but actually he did not give a damn, as if the past time were all vague. just one word when people in the village talked about him "dying", what a casual tone! it let us sense the tiger which never showed up.
